With Shayne, Soudal and Robby, we set out to visit Chinatown and to it at Samarkand at the same time. This place is very easy to find, you cannot miss it as the name is written in big letters and as Chinatown consists in only one street.
I have to admit I was really excited to try out Samarkand because never in my life had I ever tried Uzbekistan food. When we entered this place, I was really... pleasantly surprised by the decoration. Not because it was beautiful (it was actually very cheap), but that’s EXACTLY why I liked it. Nothing went well together and the red sofas looked very old but it was sooo different from Korean restaurant, it was a real change of scene. Other customers were all russians as well (the kind with bald hair and Adidas clothers, eh he....) so I guess the food really must have an authentic Russian taste. So interesting ! It really felt like we were dining in Russia or something. I loved it. |
- 소고기 볶음밥 [sogogi bokkumbap] : 8000 wons
- 양배추 고기 말이 [yang baetchu gogi mali] : 10 000 wons
- 빵 속에 고기 [bbang soggae gogi] : 4000 wons
The bread (빵) came first, all big and hot. It was OH MY GOD DELICIOUS ! I loved it because of that "not totally cooked" texture. The flavor is a bit different from classic French bread but I liked it a lot (the texture was the best, though). We dipped it in the other dishes sauce and it was just amazing. Then the first dish (소고기 볶음밥) actually tasted like a French cafeteria dish. It doesn't sound really delicious like this but Shayne and Soudal loved it. Robby and I were more disappointed. The rice was too sweet and hard for me, I like Thai/stickier rice better. The lamb meat was also kinda dry. |
She warned us that we would have to wait around 20 minutes to get them. No problem. But when it arrived... I was shocked because one samsa is super big (ok not super big but more than enough for one person).
I don't know how to describe this dish, but you may have an idea by looking at the picture. Lamb meat and onions are cooked inside a big "bread" thingy. They taste good but I didn't like how hard the "bread" cover was. The lamb meat was too strong for Robby but again, Shayne and Soudal loved this dish. Just as for everything, everyone's taste is different !
